My Background.
---------------
I have been with by top 2 US MNCc in India and US since graudating in 2000.I'm a project manager and have good experience managing projects in India and US. I'm a certified PMP. I'm currently in the US and considering giving Canada a try if I get my PR.My wife works for a top US MNC. Both of us are in US.I have two toddlers.
Can you please help with some of my questions below?
1) What areas in Canada (Toronto,Montreal??) are good to migrate for an IT PM job and IT techie job combo and at the same time day care freindly?
2) What are the top Canadian job web sites?
3) How much does average day care/preschool cost per month?
4) any inputs on how I can find a job remotely once I have a PR?
5) I read that Canadian employees want Canadian experience. Is US & India experience not taken seriously? ( I have 4 years of US and 5 years of India experience)
I have no clue of the Canadian system, websites, education, day care etc.
I would really appreciate any kind of advice. Thank you so much.
Can some one please help!!?I hope I was not arrogant in any of the questions.
As far as job markets are concerned, they are different in every metropolitan. I can't say that your job is in demand in any city, as I'm not actively seeking employment in IT. But, US schooling and education are similar in most aspects. Some employers state that they will choose a Canadian citizen over someone, like the government positions for example, but I feel that if you are qualified for a position, you are just that. So I wouldn't feel as though you would be discrimated against for being from a foriegn country.
I live in the Edmonton area, and here child care costs approximately $600 a month per child for full time care in a Day Home. I'm not too sure how much a day care costs. I've never looked into their prices.
I think that each city has certain websites that potential employees look at, but again, I'm not looking for a job in general. I sometimes look at the airport positions, but I have a lot of experience in the airlines.
My answers aren't really helpful. Sorry.
Kristi
Sorry, I missed your post the first time around.

What is MNCc or MNC that you mention later?

What is PMP? Project Management...?
prakrithi Wrote:1) What areas in Canada (Toronto,Montreal??) are good to migrate for an IT PM job and IT techie job combo and at the same time day care freindly?
I know that there are companies here in Waterloo, ON that are currently growing. I don't know anything about daycare in this area, though. I've heard that the province of Quebec (where Montreal is) has a very good subsidized daycare program.
prakrithi Wrote:2) What are the top Canadian job web sites?
http://www.workopolis.com is where I found my current job. Monster is used in Canada, too (
http://monster.ca/). You may also get some success on regional sites. For instance, my area has two high tech organizations you may want to look at:
http://www.techtriangle.com/ and
http://www.communitech.ca/en/ If you look through some of the member companies there, you could then go to those companies and apply directly.
prakrithi Wrote:3) How much does average day care/preschool cost per month?
Friends told me that for their newborn it was going to be $1200 per month, but I think that's really at the very very high end. I think their current place is about $800.
prakrithi Wrote:4) any inputs on how I can find a job remotely once I have a PR?
Finding a job remotely is always really difficult, even if you are in the same country. I'm sorry I don't really have any advice there, other than try to get a local phone number or something and see if you can pretend you're local. People are reluctant to hire anyone when it might be complicated.
prakrithi Wrote:5) I read that Canadian employees want Canadian experience. Is US & India experience not taken seriously? ( I have 4 years of US and 5 years of India experience)
It really depends on the profession. Canadian structural engineering firms are going to want Canadian trained engineers who have knowledge of the Canadian building codes. Canadian hospitals are going to want doctors who meet the medical standards of Canada. As long as your technology skills and (more importantly, especially in management) language skills are up to par, I don't know how Canadian experience matters in IT. As long as they're current, computers are computers, right? ;)
Thank you Kristi and AnitSirK. You guys are so helpful!! After my first futile attempt earlier this year, I really lost interes in this forum. I just logged in today and I have been proved wrong! You guys are so humble by asking Sorry for no mistake yours! A lot of people dont say sorry even if genuine circumstances.
Kristi - Thanks so much. This helps. $600 - $800 is not bad, as I pay $1250 USD per kid.
AnikSirK - Thanks for taking the time out to answer all my questions.
1) So you caught my inconsistent typing - I should have been more clear and consistent. I meant "Multi National Companies". PMP is Project Management Profoessional - Certified by Project Management Institute, USA and is a globally recognized project management standard.
2) The montreal lead is very useful.
3) Remotely finding a job - sad that I can't do it.
4) Computers are computers - But some companies might be specific about local experience.
Thanks again both of you for your time. Please continue to be supportive if I have more questions in the future.
Happy 2010.
prakrithi, feel free to ask any more specific questions you have. Since I now better understand your background from the explanations of the acronyms, I may be better able to help. By the way, I work as a software developer in Waterloo. Three very big companies in my area that I know have been hiring recently are Research in Motion (the people who make the Blackberry), OpenText, and Google. Google has a product management position open (I know, not quite the same as
project management, but similar sorts of skills are involved):

Thank you so much anitsirK for you giving your background and the google lead. I will surely get in touch with you for any specific questions I might have. My PR is still under process ( it got transferred to a local consulate three months ago). I'm sure I will need more help once things materialize.
Thanks
Prakash
