My US passport will expire in a few months and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to renew it (from Canada).

From what I've read it looks like I'll have to mail my passport to the US and wait up to several months for it to be returned? I don't like the idea of not having a passport for that long since it would mean that I would not be able to travel to the US if I needed to. Is there a way to renew my passport without having to mail it? Thanks for the help.
Can't you cross the border with a PR card?
You can cross into Canada by land with just the PR card, but (as I understand it - correct me if I'm wrong) you need a passport to cross into the US, even by land.
I'm not sure myself either, and just looked on the US and Canada border websites but couldn't find anything. Are you eligible to apply for an enhanced Drivers License? That is if you plan to cross by land...

Not all Provinces have the program yet, but many do. Here's a link..

It actually doesn't take months to get it back - and you can pay the extra $60 to expedite it, if you want to - but you really shouldn't need to do that. I expedited mine and it was back in less than 3 weeks - I really didn't need it that fast. Here's information about current processing times. It says expedited service 2-3 weeks door to door, regular service 4-6 weeks.

Also, you can renew at your nearest US Consulate, but you have to be able to prove it's an emergency. There's more information on passport renewal by mail from Canada at this website.
