Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone has taught in Canada after immigrating there with qualifications from another country?

My partner is a secondary school teacher (math and computing), who will be wanting to do this when we move to Canada (He's Australian, I'm Canadian). My mother was a teacher in BC for 35 years before retiring so we have her to help us a bit, and we know he probably needs to jump through a few hoops to be allowed to teach, but we're really interested in hearing from anyone who has gone through this before, and what their experiences were?

I'm sure it varies by province, and we'll probably be moving to BC, but we're not set in stone on that so any hearing about any experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!
I'm focusing on Ontario, but contact the teacher's college in BC and check the requirements. I am certified English 5-adult in the US but will probably be only 7-10 in Ontario. There's also major teacher surplus in some areas (like Toronto..ugh!), so check into that too. There's always the supply teacher list to get started! :)
I don't mean to interrupt the original poster's thread but I am in a similar situation. I am in the Master's program for Secondary Education (Social Studies) in Michigan and I was wondering what would be a better option: to finish my degree here in the States or transfer to a university in Ontario specifically to get certified there?

If I finished my degree in Michigan, would the process of certification in Ontario be a long one?

I will visit a few universities to ask some of these questions but I thought I would try to get some input on this forum. Anything would help! Thank you!

From what I've read, if you're certified in only one subject area, you can teach 7-10th grades. All that could slow up your certification in Canada is the fact that you may not be legal to work in Canada at the time. That was the problem I had.. so I won't be certified until I can work, which meant I couldn't find a job because I wasn't certified... a catch-22 sort of thing. But once you get PR it's not a big problem. They have LOTS of internationally trained teachers. The problem is finding a job in the saturated job market there :(
I just finished training to become a teacher with a Qts in Wales and I am very interested in teaching in Canada. My girlfriend just finished her BA in history and religious studies and wants to complete a PGCE.

1) Is it possible for me to teach in Canada with my qualifications?
2) Is it best for my girlfriend to complete her PGCE (teacher training) in Wales or in Canada?
3) Is there a need for primary trained teachers in Canada?
I don't know much about teaching grade school/high school, etc. but I do know here in Vancouver there are a ton of ESL schools... I mean A TON!
ESL is a completely different certification.. although I have an English degree and a Masters in Education, I would have to go back to school for at least a year to be officially certified to teach ESL in Ontario.

In Ontario, there isn't really much of a need for any kind of teacher in the public schools except for things like ESL, French, etc. It's extremely frustrating to think that I spent 6 years learning how to teach and knowing that, most likely, I won't be able to do so here. They say that Ontario trained teachers have at least a 5 year wait for a full time teaching job, at least in the 'golden horseshoe' area (Toronto/Niagara/London). I can't speak for the rest of Canada though, it depends entirely on where you plan on living.
The regular schools here are talking about laying teachers off. They got a big raise during the labor shortage 3 years ago, and now they can't afford the graduated increases, so are going to make the budget balance by losing teachers.
I just looked at postings back home and I could get a job teaching at a college right now.. very frustrating.. but I guess everything happens for a reason! I'm coming to terms with the idea of beginning a new profession. Maybe someday there will be a place for me to teach here.
My partner teaches secondary school math and computers... he's lucky that those are two areas (especially math) that they are still looking for teachers.

I know the primary school teaching market is saturated, unfortunately.
Does anyone have a link or some place where I can get information on what is needed to teach in Canada? By the time my husband and I are ready to do immigration I will have finished my Bachelors in Early Childhood Ed and have a few years experience (yeah, I read that the market is saturated) and hopefully either finished or have almost finished my Masters as well. We would be moving to his family home in Nova Scotia. I am searching the internet and on here as well for more information, but I thought if someone here might help?
I don\'t know about NS, but a Masters isn\'t any help in Ontario :/ I know from experience.. that\'s why I\'m a receptionist right now instead of a teacher... I don\'t know if the surplus is that bad in NS though. You need to look up the Teachers College for NS and see the requirements, etc. Good Luck!
Thanks...will do that. Hope things open up for you soon, for teaching that is.
Does anybody know about Ex pats teaching in Canada, preferably the independent schools?
