OTTAWA – Rising unemployment could force the federal government to nudge shut the door on thousands of foreigners looking to make Canada their new home, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney says.

I suppose it makes sense, if you have high unemployment, it doesn't make sense to keep bringing in large number of immigrants.

There however should be an exemption for family class since most are not doing it for economic reasons.
Right now people that have been fired from work have a maximum deadline of 1 year untill they can find work again(in their field). If in the case of young people it isn't that of a big deal to find another job (they can learn another trade very easily) , for a person that passes the age of 45 it becomes very hard to find it. The problem is not now when they are being on a layoff but when they cannot resort to the system to help them out. I believe that in 6 month Canada and America will have great losses in their economies, more has yet to come. People with great experiences in specific fields will have to find jobs even as dish washers...
I think it is very safe to assume family class would be left alone.
