My husband was accepted as a permanent resident. They asked for his passport, we sent it in.....yesterday they called to see why we didn't include a fedex label. Then they emailed him that whatever they're putting in his passport, I'm assuming it's a visa or whatnot....is only good while valid. ie I'm under the impression there is a time frame that he'll have to land. Does anyone know how long that is. I'm worried that they sent it registered mail and that it's going to expire soon. My husband assures me they wouldn't give you a week to land after they issue it. Does anyone have any words of encouragement. So close, yet still stressed...........Sigh
Usually it is valid for 1 year or until the medicals expire whichever is the shortest.
thank you. I was freeking out, because they called and emailed wondering why we didn't send a fedex label....and they said it'll take 7 business days for the passport to get here via registered mail......made me wonder, maybe it's a quick time frame you have to do the actual landing.

when does your medical expire? it's been a year since we sent in the application.....they haven't mentioned anything re: re-doing the medical
When did you have your medical done?, I believe with an outland it is usually requested at the end of the application, either way it will be 12 months from the date of medical (they can extened it, but I am pretty sure this is only for inland cases)
Actually for outland it's to be sent with the application.

Sometimes, yes - instead of making you get another medical - they will ask you if you can land quickly & the validity date can be short.

Sometimes they can/will extend the medical for a bit also if it's close

Thank you so much guys. I did see your replies prior to today. I'm just going to post the update, in case this helps anyone.

March 25th, 2010 THE PASSPORT returned with visa inside and CPR!!!! waaaahooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Funny thing is my husbands visitor visa expires March 31st, so when I called CIC they highly recommended landing before the end of the month. After all this time, now we're frantically planning the boarder "run". Seems to crazy to be true.

The visa we received today (not the visitor one) has an expiry June 2010, and seems like the crypting codes reveal that the medical is valid till then. I guess they do extend their validity dates because we sent in the whole PR package Feb 2009, and his medical was inclosed at the time. It's definitively been over a year at this point.

I hope this helps others. I will write one more entry when we return, on how the "landing" part goes :) YAHOOOO!!!!!!
It's not uncommon for CIC to extend the validity of medical results, especially if there was a clean bill of health the first time, and the medical results are only just a year old when they are ready to issue the visa. The IO has to get approval from the medical office to do this, but it's probably less work for CIC than processing an entire new medical, so purely from an administrative perspective it makes sense for them to extend the results if possible.

If his temporary status is about to expire, it's definitely best if you do the "border run" before then, but if you can't manage it, I wouldn't worry too much, just do it as soon as you can. What is absolutely essential, though, is that you do the landing before the PR visa expires.

Rather than going to the border, have you called the call centre to find out if your nearest local CIC office might have a last minute opportunity to do the landing there? That might be easier / faster than getting to the border, depending on where you live.

March 30, 2010 - landed! :) yahoo!!!

Totally anti-climactic?! We drove across the boarder, and in less than 20 mins it was done. Only a few questions "have you ever been asked to leave Canada?", "criminal record?", "how much money do you have with you?".....those type of questions. A few signatures, and we were off. Almost too easy. Wow. I don't know what to worry about anymore.

Thank you to this site for all the help and advices!!

Thank you for the advice on local CIC office being able to do a last minute landing......we didn't bother and just enjoyed the road trip (all 16hrs of it ;) it was nice actually to just drive and plan life a bit) ;).
Yeah, the landing is surprisingly simple after everything else you have to go through.

Incidentally, someone posted this thread over on another forum yesterday, truly unbelievable - they issued the visa with only 4 days validity, and didn't even mail it until after it had expired.
